The Long-billed Dowitcher feeds on invertebrates, both those living in water and on land. We photographed this pair at the mouth of Salt Creek on the north coast of the Olympic Peninsula.

Long-billed Dowitchers are very similar to Short-billed Dowitchers, and guides say the best way to determine which species you are observing is by the call. But Pacific Short-billed Dowitchers have a distinctly white belly, and no white is visible on the belly of either of these birds in any of our photographs, so I think this is a safe identification.
