The Migratory Grasshopper occurs thoroughout the United States and southern Canada, often in weedy, disturbed environments. A significant crop pest, this species migrates en masse when the population density increases.

These grasshoppers are common in grassy areas of the Olympics. In some spots, such as just south of Obstruction Point, each step disturbs half a dozen or more.
