One of the west’s commonest lizards, the Western Fence Lizard occurs from sea level to above 9,000 feet, but not in deserts. The Northwestern subspecies occurs from central California north into the western part of eastern Washington, and on the north Olympic Peninsula. We photographed this individual on Point Wilson Beach at Fort Worden, near Port Townsend, Washington. Between an area of sparce vegetation and the water line, beach logs provide the preferred habitat for this lizard.
